The Guardians of Jade Mountain" is an artistic creation that explores historical traces from the past, rooted in the subject matter of ethnographic investigation. Set in the early 20th century during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, it is part of director Hayoun Kwon's trilogy on Asian colonial and post-colonial history. Deviating from a focus on the nation, the narrative delves into the diverse backgrounds and origins of individuals, challenging conventional notions of the enemy. The story unfolds as the leader of a Bunun tribe, considered the guardian of Jade Mountain, encounters a Japanese anthropologist sent by the Japanese colonial government for research during a tense period. In the atmosphere of the era, their unexpected friendship becomes a remarkable anecdote. Director Hayoun Kwon, a Korean descent residing in France, draws inspiration from the similar historical backgrounds of Taiwan and Korea, both having experienced Japanese colonization, to uncover the story of Taiwan
