“The Island of Shells" is a compelling 6-DoF animated documentary delving into the struggles of Fred Chin, a Malaysian student wrongfully implicated in the Tainan American News Agency bombing and falsely linked to the Communist Party of Malaysia.
This immersive single-player experience, lasting 35 minutes, explores Fred's 12-year imprisonment in Jing Yuan Rehabilitation Prison and his poignant reunion with his mother after nearly a decade. The narrative, focusing on the mother-son bond, blends historical authenticity with a fictional adventure about a boy's departure and return home.
Visually, the project draws from Southeast Asian Shadow puppetry and Shell painting, crafts that political prisoners on Green Island engaged in during the white terror era, to create an evocative and interactive storytelling environment.
